Manic Monday (#35)--Bug

O
ne of my fondest and most treasured memories as a child was playing outside until much after dark and catching fireflies and placing them in a jar. I loved watching them emit that fluorescent glow and always wondered how exactly they did that. I would then place that jar next to my nightstand and fall asleep watching their brilliance of light and listen to the sound of the crickets chirping next to my window. But I would always wake up the next morning puzzled because my lightening bug jar was always empty!!Years later I found out that my mother would set them free after I would fall asleep.

Beautiful trip down memory lane! I almost posted something similar. :)
I remember searching for fireflies or "lightning bugs" as we called them when I was a kid. It was great fun!
i still remember the smell of them too!
smiles, bee
xxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
I vaguely remember doing this too.
Except I think my mom was ok with letting them die in the jar. :)
I hope I remembered to poke a few air holes for them!
Magic for a child and a sensitive mother who cared enough to let the little bugs free to go make more bugs for the next summer.
I had fire files in a jar in the 1940's
Awwww.....that is a great memory! And we love your Doodle Bug! Have a wonderful week!
Your FL furiends,
Well, I grew up in California and live in Oregon now. So I have never greeted a lighting bug in person. I missed out. Nice post.
I used to love catching lightening bugs at night in the summertime. Don't see them anymore. Lol, I guess my mom was a bug killer, because were always dead in the jar the next morning.
What a cute post! I grew up in Utah... no fireflies. I almost didn't believe in them, like people not believing in snow who live in the jungle. Then we stayed with my grandma who lives in houston and I found out they are, indeed, real! Happy Manic Monday!
Love your post! And I adore your mom's attitude - that was the way my dad was.
I didn't see lightning bugs until I was an adult and we visited my husband's family in Missouri. I loved the bugs and hated the humidity...
(I like grasshoppers, too - have even eaten them! I just don't want them eating my dinner,,,smiles....)
~~~Blessings~~~
p.s. So glad you're back!
Oh how I love fireflies! They are my favorite...
The other night, driving home at dusk, we passed some hedgerows that were practically glowing with lightning bugs. It made all of us in the car nostalgic for catching fireflies!
What a wonderful memory! I don't recall catching fireflies. I guess being a city kid, I didn't have as many opportunities.
Such a lovely memory! Mr and my sisters use to catch them, too!
Awwww - thanks for sharing this cute memory... and for your kind comments, too.
I will post more photos of Lily, of course. *g* I can't resist *LOL*
Sweet. I was just thinking of that very memory this weekend when the fireflies were right outside the window.
I still love lightning bugs!
Did I tellyou how happy I am that you're back blogging? Missed ya...
There were a couple of lightning bugs outside in the front yard the other day and I really enjoyed watching them. It always brings back memories of capturing them in jars at my grandmother's house when I was a kid.
I've never seen a firefly.
Cute story, takes me right back to childhood. It was nice of your mom to let the firefly lose at nights.
I love this story!
Wonderful!!!
Have a nice weekend.
That is really sweet. Good for your mom
Thanks for reminding me about this. I hardly ever see fireflies anymore. Maybe I am just too busy to notice.
very fun photo; i dont recall our firefly jars being quite this pretty!
