Houses In Pretty Boxcars

I was doing some research on the history of the style of house that our recent purchase of a Foursquare house. I stumbled upon an old 1920's ad for a "kit model" for this style of home. I was also amused to find out that Sears and Roebuck used to offer these types of homes as a build-by-number building system kit. Yes, each piece of lumber was numbered, making it easy for the layman to build their own home! I read that if I looked hard enough in our attic, we might be able to spot a number or stamp on the beams (I'm definitely running up there later to check!)

In our neighborhood, a lot of these homes were built because we reside just three short blocks away from where the old B & O Railroad used to exist. The materials for the house were placed in boxcars--very convenient and cost effective--and transported directly to the buyer.

Wow, a little piece of house history I stumbled upon--and check out the price of a house in the 1920's!

How awesome! On a side note, have you ever tried to build one of those metal sheds that is "paint by number"? They're no fun. I can't imagine trying to do it with a house!!

Two grand for a house is awesome. I would guess it was tough coming up with the two grand too. How cool. That's a pretty big house too. I was surprised at the room sizes. Have a great day Bridget. :)

Oh very cool to find a piece of history about your house! You know, I didn't notice before from your photo, but the ad photo looks almost exactly identical to a house I lived in while in school (it had been broken up into 3 apartments and I lived in one). It was about the same age - I bet it was made from the same kit. Interesting! :)

I've read about this.

My folks purchased a pre-fabricated home, which is a very similar idea as these old kit style homes. It's a big thing in the pacific northwest.

The companies that sell and then build the homes put them up in 90 days.

Now that's a pretty neat thing and I could almost - almost mind you - afford to buy a house at that price!

I get laugh out some price way back when.
I been told the story of my grandparents buying acres for under $4.00.

They sell house kits and some people down the road just bought one and had it put up.

Too cool! I grew up in a Sear and Roebuck kit house. When dad enclosed the front porch he removed some of the siding and sure enough there were numbers on all the boards!

I think my first parsonage might have been one of those houses. It sure looked like that.

I have heard about this before. Sears used to be quite the company with their catalog. I guess just receiving the Wish Book was like Christmas looking through it.

I've heard that entire towns use to come in from Sears in Chicago, when they really settled down to settling the plains.

Hi Bridget -- I had heard of these but have never seen one that I know of. Your house is very nice and will make a wonderful home for you all!
I have been missing you on WW. Are you going to do it after the painting and settling in is halfway done? If so, I will leave the link on my WW to you.

There is a small town that our train goes through...wycombe ...and the majority of the houses there are "sears" houses. It neat to see that there is someone else who is interested in them!
