Photo Hunters (#20)--Smelly

This is a picture taken of the elephant bay at the San Diego Zoo. As you might imagine, elephants are not the cleanest animals, being so big and enjoying covering their bodies in mud and dirt. Although the zoo keeps a very clean environment for these animals, the places where they roam are still a bit SMELLY. The elephants were my daughter's favorite, she wanted to ride them!

Beautiful photos! I never noticed that elephants smell (well, I only saw them in zoos too) - only remember that lions can take your breath away!!

Nice interpretation of a difficult theme! We took an elephant ride once in Indonesia and the elephant - er, um - voided its bladder and its bowels but did not get any of the stuff on itself! I have never seen anything like it.

You can read the yarn (It's called Taken To Tusk) on Terry Fletcher's excellent Anglo-Indian Portal. I think he even set it to music!

I'm so glad to hear they are well cared for. I keep hearing the past couple of years about awful conditions in zoos for elephants.

In my opinion, a zoo MUST be smelly to attract visitors. That's the original smell that people wants to smell when they visit the zoo. Hahah... (= Have a fun day!

Vulnerable isn't the right word. What is it about an elephant's eyes? They look so kind. I love an the face and eyes of an elephant and these pictures touch me, just looking into the elephant's eyes. Thank you.

I love elephants, but you are right! They are very smelly!

Lisa said...

Elephants dust themselves and give themselves mud baths to protect their sensitive skin. It may be thick skin, but it's very sensitive to sun and also insects. And the smell is most likely because they are in a very small space for being so very large and a zoo just ain't the place for such large, intelligent animals. You should check out http://elephants.com. This is the website for The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee home to 19 rescued former zoo and circus elephants. If we could understand any of them, they'd tell you the sanctuary is heaven compared to a zoo or circus.
