Kids Craft: Simple Watercolor Tissue Flowers

Iplan to do this project with my kids VERY soon. We made some flowers out of colored tissue paper for Easter and they turned out wonderfully, but I like the idea of using watercolor paints because I LOVE the effect that this gives. This is a very simple project and you will need very few supplies for it!! These would be pretty as an arrangement or if you poked them into a styrofoam wreath base to make a beautiful summer arrangement.

Materials:

facial tissues (you can use different colors if you want)
white or clear thread
scissors
watercolor paint
water
paintbrush
optional pipe cleaners of floral wire

Instructions:

1. Take one tissue and fold it back and forth (like an accordion). While it is still folded closed, accordion style, fold the tissue in half lengthwise once.

2. Take the end of the tissue that has the fold, and tie a piece of thread around the middle of the accordion fold.

3. Separate the layers of the tissue and fluff it into a flower

4. Use watercolor paint that is very diluted and use a paintbrush to lightly touch the edges of the "petals" and let the colored water wick itself up into the flower.

5. If you would like to add them to an arrangement of make stems, use floral wire or pipe cleaners and secure them over where you tied your thread.

I did something similar to this when I was teaching. We used coffee filters, the kids colored the coffee filters using markers, then they sprayed the filter with a water bottle and the mist made the colors run together. Once they dried we made them into flowers. They always turned out really nice.

My daughter LOVES making these flowers ~ we'll have to give them a try again.

We tried the dough beads today. Ours didn't turn out quite as good as the ones you pictured. But I did make a cute little magnet. I think our dough was a bit too watery, and then my son kept throwing flour into the mix (and everywhere). Try, try again. However, they all had a GREAT time. :-)

I love these, and think my daughter will. We will definitely be trying these in the next couple of days.

We did make some of these flowers. If you know how to make them just like the ones in your picture, let me know. I took a picture of ours and it's on my blog. They look very different. But my daughter loves them anyway.
