Kids Craft: Dirt Cake In A Flower Pot

"Dirt" Cake In A Flower Pot

...to sterilize the pot
place in the oven
for a few hours at
350 degrees...

This is a really fun, and edible project to do with the kids that requires no cooking. It is as much fun to make as it is to eat. This is made in an unglazed, sterilized terra cotta pot (or a plastic pot) that can be obtained at your local grocery or department store for pennies. We always stick a fake silk flower in the top and use a new shovel to serve the "dirt."

Use a pot with about a 5 quart capacity (a little bit over a gallon).

Dirt Cake Recipe:

1 package of regular Oreo cookies (16 oz)
6 TBSP butter, room temperature
12 oz cream cheese, room temperature
4 packages (3.9 oz each) instant chocolate pudding
4 3/4 oz milk
16 oz thawed Cool Whip

Place 1 Oreo cookie over the drainage hole in the
flowerpot. Crush the remainder of the cookies
until it resembles fine dirt (use a rolling pin or
a food processor on pulse can accomplish this).

Combine cream cheese and butter in a large
bowl and set aside.

In another large bowl beat together the milk
and the pudding mixes. Fold the pudding mixture into
the cream cheese mixture. Fold in the Cool Whip.

Alternate placing layers in the pot starting with a layer of
cookie crumbs, and ending with cookie crumbs. Chill at least
3 hours before serving. Place your flower in the center of the pot.

Okay, I see---this is a far far far nicer version of the dirt cake with worms. Or the cemetery with boney fingers. Far nicer, my friend...thanks for showing it! xo

This is so much fun to make, I've made it several times for potlucks & depending on the occasion I will sometimes tuck in a few gummy worms for more laughs.

I love dirt cake too, and I was going to suggest the gummy worms, but I see someone else already beat me to it :) They add a nice little unexpected surprise, hehehe!

What a great idea! Thank you!
I've made the dirt cake with my granddaughter, but I've always used a cake pan. The flowerpot fits the theme so much better!
